Syslogic launches the EN 50155-certified Railway Computer RML 83 for rolling stock applications. Its SMARC architecture and Intel Atom Amston Lake processors combine energy efficiency with flexibility for custom hardware adaptations.

Coinciding with InnoTrans, Syslogic is expanding its railway technology portfolio with the EN 50155-certified Railway Computer RML 83. The compact railway computer is based on a SMARC module featuring an Intel® Atom™ Amston Lake processor. This modular architecture simplifies custom hardware adaptations and shortens development time.
The Railway Computer RML 83 offers a comprehensive range of interfaces, including three Gigabit Ethernet ports, two CAN interfaces, two digital I/O interfaces, two USB ports, two RS-232 ports, one RS-422/RS-485 interface, and a DisplayPort output. This makes the railway computer suitable for a wide range of rolling stock applications.
For onboard communications, the device comes standard with 5G connectivity. This enables vehicle data to be transmitted in real time to control centers or cloud systems, for example, while also allowing the system to receive information from infrastructure. Syslogic also integrates RTK and dead-reckoning functionality into the RML 83, using the u-blox ZED-F9R module specifically designed for railway applications. This enables centimeter-level positioning even during temporary interruptions in satellite reception.
Thanks to the SMARC standard, the RML 83 provides considerable flexibility for customer-specific adaptations. Benjamin Gassler, Product Manager at Syslogic, explains: “The RML 83 was deliberately designed as a modular platform, allowing us to adapt it quickly and easily to specific customer requirements.” This gives Syslogic a flexible foundation for made-to-order projects.
The RML 83 is available with either the Intel® Atom™ x7433RE quad-core processor or the x7835RE octa-core processor, both based on the Amston Lake platform. Both processors are optimized for long-term availability and combine energy efficiency with high performance. Syslogic pairs the Intel SMARC module with its own carrier board and a custom-developed enclosure. Rated to IP40, the enclosure features integrated cooling fins for efficient, fanless operation at ambient temperatures ranging from –40 to +70 °C.
By combining a low-power processor with an industrial-grade design, the maintenance-free Railway Computer RML 83 achieves high MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) values while consuming less than 20 watts of power. This makes it ideal for long-term 24/7 operation in rolling stock and off-train applications. Like all Syslogic railway computers, the RML 83 is designed for long-term availability, making it well suited for railway systems with extended life cycles.
The RML 83 complies with relevant railway standards, including EN 50155 (OT4), EN 50125, EN 45545-2 HL3, and EN 61373. For electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), the railway computer meets the requirements of EN 50121. It also supports input voltages from 24 to 110 VDC, making it suitable for the 24, 36, and 110 V onboard power systems commonly used in rail vehicles.
Syslogic can supply the railway computer with preconfigured Debian Linux or Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC. Drivers for common Linux distributions are also available.
Typical applications for the Railway Computer RML 83 include Passenger Information Systems (PIS), network nodes, data logging, and onboard communication and networking applications.
Syslogic is one of the few manufacturers that develops and manufactures embedded computers specifically for railway applications. The company has been supplying the railway industry for more than 20 years and counts railway operators and leading rolling stock manufacturers worldwide among its customers.
