Security for Embedded Systems: Trusted Platform Module (TPM)

Industry is driving forward digitalization and networking, and the IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) is the order of the day. This is resulting in an increased risk of hacker attacks and thereby an increased need for security in the industry. Syslogic has responded to this need with a retrofittable TPM (Trusted Platform Module) for embedded systems.

Security is one of the major challenges in the realization of the IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) and Industry 4.0 hardware and software suppliers are pressed to find the right solutions.

Trusted Platform Module: physical security mechanism
Syslogic develops and manufactures embedded systems used as controls in a wide range of industries. The company is now launching a retrofittable Trusted Platform Module (TPM), which can be connected to the CPU boards in Syslogic industrial computers and touch controls via the LPC (low pin count) interface. TPM prevents unauthorized access to control systems, thus preventing downtime in production.

The TPM is activated in the BIOS and offers security mechanisms that prevent attackers from manipulating the security functions of the embedded system. TPM can also be used to create encryption keys, which enable software verification, data encryption, hardware identification and monitoring of system integrity. Combined with a unified extensible firmware interface (UEFI), TPM also ensures that only the specifically permitted operating system is booted. This reliably prevents other storage media or manipulated operating systems from starting.

TPM is compatible with Linux or Windows

The TPM from Syslogic is compatible with preconfigured operating systems, such as Windows Embedded 7, Windows 10 IoT Enterprise or Linux. Depending on the firmware, the security module supports standard TPM 1.2 or 2.0, with Syslogic relying on SLB9665 chip technology from Infineon.

Raphael Binder, Product Manager at Syslogic, says: "Security plays a key role in the development of our embedded systems." According to Binder, the new TPM offers modern security features and therefore effective protection in everyday IIoT matters.
